Questions
Hypothesis
Answers - what we have found out
Whose job is this
How many government old age homes are there in our area?
I think that there are 2 rest homes in our area.
There is actually 3 rest homes in our area including Highland Park. Bucklands Beach retirement home, Metlife care and Pakuranga Park village.
Levana
What are the facilities like where they stay?
I think that the facilities in a public rest wouldn't be as good as what they are in a private home because a private home would cost more.
The facilities are clean and healthy just as they would live like it at home and they are welcome to make their own room as home like as they want so like their old furniture basicly everything that they want they can put it in their room.
Layne
Is there enough safe facilities in the rest homes?
Yes I think that there is enough safe facilities
Yes there is some but they think they need more safe facilities in the rest home.
Quinn
Are there enough resources in the rest homes?
yes I do think there is enough resources in rest homes
"We are in the process of building new facilities and we have set aside monies for improved resources." (Manager)
Nathan
Do they get a healthy meal everyday?
I think they do have a healthy meal everyday.
Yes the old people do have a square meal. The meals are suitable for the old people
Levana
Are they treated nicely?
Yes I think that they would be treated with respect because if they weren't I think that they would leave the rest home.
"Yes we treat all are residents with kindness and respect. Some of are residents can't speak well or hear so we often consult their relatives about how to give them their best care." (Manager)
Nathan
Are there people with them 24 /7?
I think that they wont be with them 24/7
No they are not with them 24/7 but they can get contact with them 24/7 with a buzzer in their room.
Quinn
Is there enough suitable facilities in all public places?
Yes I think there would be suitable facilities in public places because if there weren't who knows what could happen to them
Yes there is some suitable facilities in some places for old people but some people say that there are barely anything where are and they think that they need more for the older people.
Layne

You need to be looking at a Human rights issue related to our community. You will need to come and talk to me.
Read the task outline. You have to start with a brainstorm of all the issues related to old people in our community, and look at how/if their human rights may be threatened. So this is the starting point.

Our Gap:

We have found out that most old people are lonely and they need more company.

We are doing this research because we think that old people should have the same rights as everyone.

Human rights neglected or violated:

*Right to equality

*

Stop please read!

There has been a change of are questions when I talked to Mrs Mitchell Please when calling the rest home please tell them about are wiki site and what are we doing try an arrange a day no mater what rest home you are doing. Please remember we can only come on a non specialist day and for the permission slip for going to the rest homes we have to have when we can go (time) Plus if a parent can come or a teacher.

Question one is now: What are some of the elderly s needs what other needs do they need.

Question two is now: can we help in anyway e.g food or books anything just ask

Question three is now:

Question four is: you don't have to talk to the elderly just speak to the manager or a worker they should know what the elderly like.

from fellow student Nathan

6.9.07.

Q1: What are some of the elderly s needs?

Q2: Can we help out in any way ?

Q3: If we can help, when can we help and what can we do to help?

PLAN OF ACTION:

We are going to focus on the Bucklands Beach Rest home

We are going to decide what we can offer to do

Levana - play flute and violin song- for violin Famous Waltz and for flute Morning Has Broken

Nathan - play piano

Quinn and Layne are going to sing a song ( make a programme )

We are going to each bake something to take down for tea

We are going to have a little concert, have tea with them and chat to them

Mrs. Mitchell will go there today 11th September and make a time

Then we will send the permission slips and ask for parent help

We need to practice in the meantime

Quinn and Layne need to work on singing "Lean on me"

Levana and Nathan need to start thinking of what songs they will be pro forming

When we get to the rest home we will introduce or selfs and tell them what we are going to do today

Peer Reflection:

PEER_REFLECTION_group_5.png

Teachers Reflection: 22.8.07 I have made a comment at the top of the page. You all need to read the task outline and think about this issue in relation to Human Rights. I have deleted some of your work because it did not related to the task outline and to what we are studying. You all need to come and have a conferencing session with me. Mrs. M
Teacher comment 30.8.07 : You are more focussed but you are behind. There are no answers to the questions with supporting research references. Today you were talking to me about going down to the Bucklands Beach Retirement Village but how have you got to this point before you have answered all your questions. All of these need to be completed by tomorrow. You have two weeks to complete this first section of the task. Once you have done the research and answered these questions, then you will be able to identify the gaps and identify needs for the aged in our community. You need to go back over your questions and reword some of them. As I said before, I am very concerned that you are so far behind. I don't know if all of you have been on task during the class sessions. You have had about 5 hours at school for this first part. You still have not added a picture ( one of the first instructions ) and you have not done the brainstorm of the points we wrote down together last week. I will chat to you all tomorrow. Mrs. M

Teacher comment 31.8.07: Met with group to discuss what had to be done next.

Peer Reflection

Layne: Our group is going really well we are all working together as a team and helping each other.
We have made up a graph to show who is doing what when but we haven't yet decided who is doing what. 21.8.07

Quinn: Our group is all doing their job well and we are all having a turn at writing a reflection each night so we can all
get involved in this group. Tomorrow we are going to do our brain-storm and we will also start to think of our questions.
We are also going to make a title page heading and put pictures up. 22.8.07

Levana: Our group is going on well. At the brainstorm we all gave some ideas about Rest home facilities. We now need
to know who is doing what. We have not yet put some pictures or the title. The questions graph looks great. Tomorrow
we will look at more questions on rest home facilities. 23.8.07

Nathan: Our group is finishing our brain storm and we are starting to research our questions. Our group is all getting along
with each other and we are all starting to do some research on our questions. 24.8.07

Layne: Our team is working really well together we have already finished doing our brainstorm we just need to touch it up.
We have nearly finished our questions we have only got a few more to do. We are all pitching in well. 27.8.07

Quinn: We have been focusing on our questions lately and some of us have done them. We need to stay on task more and get more work done in our class sessions. We will call the rest home on Thursday or Friday and ask them some questions. 28.8.07

Levana: We will be focusing on the questions tonight. Everyone in my group just need to be on task a little more
and stop fidgeting. We will need to put up our brain storm soon because it is still not up there yet. 29.8.07

Nathan: We are all working well and we have done our questions. As Levana said "we need to stay on task more" so we can get more done and so we can go out there and help our community. We will ring the rest home tomorrow and ask some questions. 30.8.07

Quinn: I have just called the rest home at Bucklands beach and here is some of the questions that I asked them "Do they get a square meal every day? Answer: The old people get plenty of fruit at lunch time and they get a pretty nice healthy range of meat and veges.
The next question was " Are there people with them 24/7? Answer: They said " That they have a buzzer in their rooms and if the old people hurt themselves they can push the buzzer and it rings a bell in the office. Question 3: I asked " Do they get respected nicely and treated with care? Answer: "They have to talk politely and tell them nicely what they would like them to do and they have to make sure that the old people understand what they are saying.
Question 4: Do they have enough facilities in their rest home? They have the beach right beside the rest home so they go for a swim. They have a bowling mat and games in the cupboard and have a piano, D.V.D player and a lounge. 31.8.07

Levana: We have not even put up our brainstorm which was task no.5 and this week we should be putting our plan into action and help our
community. As I wasn't here yesterday I don't know how the group is actually going on but from last time we all need to really stay
on task.4.9.07

Nathan:
Today We have but up are brainstorm finally and now all of our group should be finding out:
Which rest home we contacted.
What Human rights issues are not being met e.g Right to social security.
Plus 3 questions that you could ask to find a gap
and to find out what you could do to improve their rights.
I am doing the Howick Baptist rest home. They are making a new part in the rest home the human right is privacy so do the workers at the construction site respecting the tenants privacy.
Did the tenants of the rest home voise there opinion regarding the construction and who represented them.
5.9.07.

Layne:
Today we were just putting everything up on our Wiki and deciding what we are going to do. We are all working well and fine.
I rang up the fencilbe rest home but it didn't work so i just rang up another place called the baptist rest home. 6.09.07

Levana: We are doing well and I just need to receive the e-mail I sent otherwise I'll send it again. 10.9.07

Nathan:
We have identified the gap and we are now starting to think out are plan of action and we have made a task evaluation and set out a peer reflection table and we are thinking about a program for the day and who is doing what and I want to know if I could play more than one song. Plus out of curiosity I want to know what you could bake so could you please full it in I have put the table underneath our plan of action.
